Daily Calendar

We open every day with calendar activities. This is a very important part of our morning routine in kindergarten. We usually spend 15-20 minutes daily. Many of the kindergarten math skills are taught through the calendar.

Flag Time
  • Pledge to the American Flag
  • Pledge to the Texas Flag
  • Sing patriotic songs

Exploring the calendar
  • Name the day of the week
  • Tell the date
  • Name the month
  • Sing/say the months and days in order
  • Create a pattern on the calendar: The pieces of the calendar are in a pattern. The children love to predict what calendar piece will come next. We read these calendar patterns in different ways. A red-blue-red-blue-red pattern might be read snap-clap-snap-clap-snap.
  • Practice the concepts yesterday, today, and tomorrow!
  • Find the numeral that corresponds to the date on the yardstick.

Counting days

  • Tally the number of days in the year
  • Tally the number of days in the month
  • Practice counting the days to 100 (when we have a special celebration!)
  • Count by ones, fives, and tens to 100.
  • Create ones, tens, and hundred with straws to practice place value.

Weather report
  • Describe the weather
  • Create a real graph that shows the weather for the month using learning links
  • Predict what the weather will be like tomorrow

Mystery word/number
  • Guess a word (number) by revealing only one letter (numeral) at a time
  • Practice blending sounds
  • Practice reading left to write

Morning message
  • Read a special message about the special things that are happening today
  • Watch the teacher (or another student) model writing
  • See how letters form words
  • Inspire the desire to read and write

Sharing time
  • Listen to each other tell about special events
  • Practice asking and answering questions about the surprise box
  • Give demonstrations (Young Scientist/Geographer)
  • Show and tell
